Otomo no Sukunamaro (大伴宿奈麻呂)
OTOMO no Sukunamaro (year of birth and death unknown) was a government official in the early Nara period.
His kabane (hereditary title) was 'Sukune.'
He was the third son of OTOMO no Yasumaro, a Dainagon (Chief councilor of state). His mother is unknown. OTOMO no Tabito, OTOMO no Tanushi, and OTOMO no Inakimi numbered among his brothers, and OTOMO no Sakanoue no Iratsume, a paternal half-sister, was his wife. Sukunamaro was the father of TAMURA no Otome (the wife of OTOMO no Inakimi), OTOMO no SAKANOUE no Oiratsume (the wife of OTOMO no Yakamochi) and SAKANOUE no Otoiratsume (the wife of OTOMO no Surugamaro).
In February 708, he was created Jugoinojo (Junior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade).
In May 711, he was appointed as Saejinokami (Captain of the Left Division of Outer Palace Guards
In July 719, while in the post of Bizen no kami (Governor of Bizen Province), he was appointed as Azechi (inspector of the provincial government) of Aki and Subo Provinces. In 724, he was promoted to Jushiinoge (Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade).
Sukunamaro wrote poems prior to 724, which were dedicated to his lover serving in the Imperial Court, and these two verses, collected in the "Manyoshu" (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves [namely, Japanese poetry]), are his only remaining works. The year of his death is unknown, but he is considered to have been dead by around 727. According to the "Manyoshu" (4-759), he is known to have lived in the village of Tamura (currently Amatsuji-machi, Nara City, Nara Prefecture), and at that time, he was an Udaiben (Major Controller of the Right).
